Automobile Association and Essilor announce collaboration to promote road safety through good vision

Identifying uncorrected poor vision as a key road safety challenge, Essilor, the world leader in ophthalmic optics, and the Automobile Association (AA) have joined forces to launch a series of initiatives to improve road safety by improving road users’ vision.

During the FIA World Conference, held from 29 April to 3 May 2019 at Sun City, The Automobile Association of South Africa, a member of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), and Essilor, agreed to a partner in South Africa on a series of awareness-raising campaigns under the banner”Road Safety starts with good vision”.

The purpose of this is to make drivers aware that good vision – closely linked to reaction time – is essential for taking the right decisions on the road, making it necessary to check their eyesight regularly with eye care professionals and to protect against glare day and night (sun, lights and public lighting).

Open letter to new Minister of Transport from the AA

Congratulations on your appointment to a key Ministry in the South African government. You become the eighth minister of this department since 1994, and we pledge our support to you, as we have done with Mr Maharaj in 1994, Dr Nzimande last year, and all the other Ministers and Deputy Ministers in between.

Yours is not an easy task. But we know you fear nothing. Through this open letter we want to highlight five critical areas we believe need your attention.

Road Safety

Road safety remains one of the biggest problems facing our transport system. In 2010 the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reported that the number of fatalities on our roads was 13,967. In 2017 it was 14,050. Last year this figure dipped to 12,921. The fact is that even with the modest reported declines last year road deaths have averaged around 13,500 per annum for 10 years. That’s 135,000 people who have died on our roads in this period.

This is a national crisis that requires massive attention,…

Curbing Distracted Driving Will Save Many Lives

According to Road Traffic Management (2018), approximately 1 million road accidents are reported every year. A lot of these accidents are caused by drunk driving, texting and driving, and speeding. It follows that road safety should be a major concern for the country and should, in fact, be one of our top priorities. All road users in South Africa deserve extreme safety measures to ensure that their safety does not continue to be at stake.

As Easter holidays draw nearer, many South Africans will be travelling on the road to their respective holiday destinations. This is one of the peak accident seasons as there are more drivers on the road at any given time, generally driving long distances to family homes, church gatherings, and other holiday destinations.

This Easter, the Road Accident Fund appeal to road users to #AlwaysRemember to be conscious of all other road users, and to be mindful of the fact that you are not the only one travelling to see loved ones. In the unfortunate event…
